An extension to this idea would be that consciousness can call up experiences (symbols, knowledge, visualizations etc) and then connect them when it sees fit. This process is only partially driven by conscious exploration, and can happen spontaneously during dream sleep, but also while awake, through states known as instinct, habitual behavior, and intuition.
