Religion

> You [believe*] it until you see evidence otherwise.

Also, most useful religions dont actually assert there is a physical thing in this realm akin to elves. They believe in the divinity of, say, evolution. That our evolution has, via a programmer of unknown dimension, origin, location or shape/form, been pre-ordained, (programmed) into our DNA which is simply unfolding its internal complexity over eons.

This is one of many varieties.

Once the symbols of a religion get confused with reality, the religion starts to rot, as seen in Abrahamic varieties, where all the stories are assumed to have originated in reality. But the symbols were pointers to the non-material realm; these messages were most probably subverted in order to weaken the religion (get it under control, more of a herd)

Atheism is a belief system. Youre looking for agnosticism, which is the middle path of no-belief; between believing there is nothingand believing there is something (divinity)

Its quite simple really. There is a system to atheism. It centers on one of materialism; that physical, electrochemical reactions govern all we see and all of our history, pre/post life. This is not proven, therefore, a belief. For proof its not proven, try searching for scientists efforts in producing abiogenesis (life from nonlife) in the lab. It hasnt been done. Proud scientists think it can be done. Some are even sure of it. But all of it is belief in a possible future.

A parent who is agnostic would teach their kids (or anyone,) that they dont know the answer, for we dont have enough information. Or even just withhold even that truthful statement and let their find it out themself. This is rationality.

An atheistic parent would teach their kids there is nothing divine out there against a major tenet of science: one can never prove a negative. The reason this is? Well first because its impossible to permutate every possible experiment in order to show that a conclusion does not exist in a solution space. Also because if somehow, someone was under the impression they proved there was no divinity in this universe, theyd be blind to future data which suggests otherwise.

Im not religious nor did I grow up in a religious family. I grew up in an agnostic one. This is by far, the best option we have as rational adults. Also, religion is more meaningful when found on ones own anyway.
